Why is the bridge being replaced?

The existing Home Avenue Pedestrian Bridge is an important connection between neighborhoods on both sides of Interstate 290, the CTA Blue Line, and the CSX railroad corridor. The aging structure is nearing the end of its useful life, and its current geometry is incompatible with IDOT's long-term plans for future improvements to I-290. The project is evaluating opportunities to replace the bridge and improve accessibility, safety, comfort, connectivity and the overall user experience while creating a welcoming gateway feature for the community.

    What improvements are being considered?

The project team is evaluating a range of potential bridge concepts. Improvements under consideration include enhanced accessibility, improved pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, upgraded safety features, improved visibility and user comfort and opportunities to create a distinctive gateway connection that reflects the character of Oak Park.

    How were bridge concepts developed?

The bridge concepts were developed through an evaluation of existing conditions, engineering requirements, accessibility standards, site constraints, community goals and long-term maintenance considerations. The concepts are intended to address project needs while exploring different approaches to bridge design, functionality and user experience.

How will public feedback be used?

Community input is an important part of the project development process. Feedback received through public meetings, online engagement opportunities and stakeholder outreach will help the project team better understand community priorities and preferences. Public input will be considered alongside technical and engineering evaluations as bridge concepts continue to be refined.

    What happens next?

The project team is currently seeking public feedback on the bridge concepts being presented for review. Following the public involvement process, the team will evaluate comments received, continue refining the concepts, and advance the project through the next stages of design and development.

Will the bridge remain open during construction?

Construction planning has not yet been finalized, and it is too early to determine how bridge access may be affected during future construction activities. As the project advances and additional information becomes available, the project team will provide updates regarding construction sequencing, access, and potential impacts to bridge users.
