Why is the bridge being replaced?

The bridge is aging and no longer meets the long-term needs of the community. The bridge also must be replaced to accommodate future I-290 expansion. The replacement bridge will improve accessibility, safety, comfort, connectivity and the overall user experience while creating a welcoming gateway feature for the community.

    What improvements are being considered?

The project team is evaluating a range of potential bridge concepts. Improvements under consideration include enhanced accessibility, improved pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, upgraded safety features, improved visibility and user comfort and opportunities to create a distinctive gateway connection that reflects the character of Oak Park.

    How were bridge concepts developed?

The bridge concepts were developed through an evaluation of existing conditions, engineering requirements, planned IDOT changes to I-290, constructability, accessibility standards, site constraints, community goals and long-term maintenance considerations. The concepts are intended to address project needs while exploring different approaches to bridge design, aesthetics, functionality and user experience.

What factors are being used to evaluate bridge concepts?

Bridge concepts are being evaluated using a range of technical, operational, community and aesthetic considerations. These factors include accessibility, user comfort, safety, constructability, long-term maintenance needs, cost, visual appearance and how well each concept supports the project's goals. Public feedback is also an important part of the evaluation process and will help inform future refinement of the bridge design.

How will public feedback be used?

Community input is an important part of the project development process. Feedback received through public meetings, online engagement opportunities and stakeholder outreach will help the project team better understand community priorities and preferences. Public input will be considered alongside technical and engineering evaluations as bridge alternatives continue to be refined. Comments are always welcome and will be considered throughout the project, comments received by July 22, 2026 will be part of the Public Meeting #1 Summary.

Will nearby residents or businesses be impacted?

Potential impacts to nearby residents, businesses and bridge users will be evaluated as the project advances. Construction planning has not yet been finalized, so specific impacts related to access, noise, staging or schedule are not known at this time. The project team will provide additional information as details become available.

Will traffic on I-290, the CTA Blue Line, or the CSX railroad be affected?

The bridge crosses a complex transportation corridor that includes Interstate 290, the CTA Blue Line and CSX railroad tracks. Coordination with the appropriate transportation agencies will be an important part of future project development. Specific construction-related impacts have not yet been determined.

    What happens next?

The project team is currently seeking public feedback on the bridge alternatives being presented for review. Following the public involvement process, the team will evaluate comments received, continue refining the concepts, and advance the project through the next stages of design and development. A second public meeting is planned for Fall 2026.
