Shape Oak Park is updating the Village's zoning code—and your voice matters! Take this 10-minute survey to share what you value about our community and how you'd like to see Oak Park create more housing opportunities for everyone. Shape Oak Park is strategically updating the zoning code to create more missing middle housing—duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes that fit naturally into our neighborhoods while maintaining Oak Park's cherished character, walkability, and scale.

What is Missing Middle Housing?
Missing Middle Housing includes house-scale buildings with multiple units in walkable neighborhoods. These building types:

  • Provide diverse housing options for families, older adults, young professionals, and people at different income levels
  • Support locally-serving retail, public transportation, and walkable community connections
  • Can be newly constructed or created by renovating existing buildings

Why "Missing"?
These housing types have been largely prohibited in residential neighborhoods since the mid-20th century, when zoning regulations across the country restricted what could be built. This history has shaped who could live where—and the zoning updates Oak Park is making help address those past decisions.

Why "Middle"?
They bridge the gap between detached single-family homes and mid-rise to high-rise apartment buildings—in scale, number of units, and often affordability. Missing Middle housing creates more choices for more people. In the diagram below, the Missing Middle types are shown in yellow, providing a range of housing options between single-family homes and higher-intensity apartment buildings, both of which are represented in white.
