Home Avenue Bridge Replacement Project

The Village of Oak Park is studying options to replace the existing Home Avenue Pedestrian Bridge, which spans Interstate 290, the CTA Blue Line and the CSX railroad corridor. The project aims to improve accessibility, safety, connectivity, and the overall user experience while creating a distinctive gateway connection for the community.
Purpose & Need
The existing Home Avenue Pedestrian Bridge provides an important connection between neighborhoods on both sides of the transportation corridor. This project seeks to:
• Replace aging infrastructure
• Improve pedestrian and bicycle accessibility
• Meet current ADA accessibility requirements
• Improve safety and user comfort
• Improve visibility and connectivity
• Create a memorable gateway feature for Oak Park
History & Project Overview
The Home Avenue Pedestrian Bridge serves as an important connection between neighborhoods on both sides of Interstate 290, the CTA Blue Line, and the CSX railroad corridor.
The project team has evaluated existing conditions, accessibility requirements, engineering constraints, community goals and long-term maintenance considerations to develop potential replacement concepts for the bridge.
The project seeks to improve the user experience while creating a visually distinctive gateway feature for the Village of Oak Park.
Project Development Process
The project team developed multiple bridge concepts using a range of technical and community-based criteria, including:
• Accessibility
• User comfort
• Constructability
• Long-term maintenance
• Cost
• Community character and aesthetics
Three concepts are being submitted for public review and discussion. Community feedback will help inform future refinement of the bridge design.
