Vision Zero
Vision Zero is the commitment to eliminating death and serious injury from traffic crashes. By changing how we design, use and view our streets, we can make them safer for everyone. The Village of Oak Park launched its Vision Zero planning process in the fall of 2023 and is expected to conclude the project by the fall of 2024, resulting in a Vision Zero action plan.
Community and stakeholder engagement will continue throughout the remainder of the project. Subscribe to the project website to stay informed on these upcoming events.

Automated Enforcement of Speed Limits and Stop Signs
This is a public safety measure and not yet another “surveillance tech” for a tyrannical government spying on and tracking its citizens! A little bit of common sense is all one needs to understand that automated enforcement is way more effective and far less subjective than human enforcement!

Repeal requirement for residents to license bicycles
Current ordinance is worded as follows: “ 15-2-14: LICENSE REQUIRED: No person who resides in the Village shall ride or propel a bicycle on any street or upon any public way within the Village unless such bicycle has been licensed and the license decal is attached thereto as prescribed herein. (1981 Code; amd. Ord. 1983-0-12, 3-21-1983)” Probably doesn’t make a difference in practice but unless there is a really good reason for this, it’s just another reason for a resident to choose to drive rather than ride a bicycle.

New leaf collection pattern:
Every year around this time my commute gets negatively impacted because homes and property owners on E-W arterials/through-ways like Division rake their leaves into the bike lane whenever the feel like it, forcing me into the "car-lane." Sometimes those piles appear the day after a scheduled collection and last for a week. Its ridiculous to put in bike lanes, then encourage our neighbors to occupy those bike lanes with leaves, even for a single day, but its worse when people miss the collection day and the piles sit for a week.

Golden hour glare for westbound traffic during late evening / sunset on south Blvd
This is an extreme hazard during the golden hour when the sun is about to set. Lack of trees and the set back of the structures along the south side of this street is the cause compared to other streets where this isn’t so much an issue. Consider making south blvd eastbound only and north blvd westbound only, and adding bike lanes so crashes are limited to bike on bike and car on car.

In the short term, use plastic polls (like at Irving). In the long term, hardscape it.
